While circulating on Place Roger-Joly, it is difficult not to turn your head to observe this new copper-colored building which will be the Guéry private school. The 270 children schooled at the top of the Butte des Charbonniers and their fourteen teachers will move next school year.
Their new establishment is located opposite the Sainte-Marie college and presents an architecture that has nothing to do with its neighbours. In a few months, the copper will patina. The shiny appearance should fade quickly.
The facade is constructed of shiny copper and consists of large glass walls. The choice of materials has been carefully studied. “At the moment the copper is shiny and a bit orange, but over the weeks the color will become dull and brown. It should make you think of the tiles you see in Chartres,” warns Yolaine Didou, the architect.
Six millions d’euros
The entrance will be made of glass to mark “the heart of the establishment”. A plant wall will be installed on part of the facade as well as a stained glass window decorated with an abstract design.Philippe Charpentier is Chairman of the Guéry School Board of Directors. He is surrounded by Francine Blanchet, the head of the establishment and Yolaine Didou, architect at the Yda agency.
The future Guéry school will have 1,980 m² of building including ten classrooms, a library, a self-service hall, activity rooms… The playground, located at the back of the school, has a surface area of 1,200 m² , substantially identical to the current school of the Butte des Charbonniers, but more practical. The yard will be divided into two parts, one for kindergartens, the other for primary school students.
The land, previously unused, was bought by the Catholic education management body from the City of Chartres. The overall project (works, purchase of land, equipment) cost 6 million euros.
