This new ‘smart necklace’ can help smokers quit smoking. Here’s how.
A smart wearable device under development could one day monitor smokers as they light up a cigarette and decide if they need help reaching their goals to quit smoking.
The necklace, called SmokeMon, currently consists of a fairly simple blue box that hides the heat-sensing technology, though in time it could be scaled down to be a fancy pendant.
How to quit smoking with the help of technology
Discreet and lacking a means of identifying users or those around them, the technology aims to address privacy and stigma concerns, with early user testing already showing a positive response.

Given the impact that cigarette smoking has on public health, there are now plenty of scientifically supported methods to kick the habit. As experts learn more about the behaviors of smokers who want to quit, they can continue to shape their advice on how to go about it.
Development DEVICE of monitoring is led by researchers from Northwestern University in the US, with the aim of helping smokers quit the habit by understanding their smoking habits.
“A person can learn from slip-ups by realizing that they have not failed, but only had a temporary setback. To avoid a relapse, we can then start to focus on how we manage our triggers and deal with cravings,” says lead author Nabil Alshurafa, a behavioral and computer scientist at Northwestern University.
The key advantage of this new technology is that it detects smoking behavior more accurately and discreetly than other prototype devices.
