What is the movie ‘The Substance’ about?
The film centers on Elisabeth Sparkle, an actress whose ‘glory years’ are already over. After being unfairly fired by Harvey, the head of the studio, she falls into despair at not being able to get roles due to her age, as this affects her usual income.
After this, Elisabeth suffers a fateful traffic accident, which takes her to a mysterious company where she is offered a substance that promises to temporarily transform your body to a younger version. The rules are simple, if you decide to receive the substance you must spend a week in your new body and another in your real one. But, if you break this rhythm, it will have serious consequences.
Why can’t people watch ‘The Substance’ in its entirety?
Simon Tierney, renowned Irish journalist, shared on his X account that “some people left the screening of The Substance we attended last night. One of the most violent films I have ever seen. The last hour is practically impossible to watch. The first hour is brilliant. Classic case of a movie that needs better editing. The point was made long before the credits rolled.”

Likewise, Javier Ibarreche, Mexican content creator, mentioned that this is “a body horror film, technically a horror film. And what generates horror here has to do with physical alterations to the bodies. Here the shock is seeing in extreme detail the way the characters’ bodies break and mutate.”
“The reason The Substance is making the noise it is making, that the promotional campaign is the reactions of the people in the cinemait’s because seeing one body coming out of another is the lightest thing that happens in the film. As the story progresses they explore different forms of the grotesque,” adds Ibarreche.
