Last year, the Louvre was the museum that was visited by the most people, reports the Art Newspaper.
According to research that the publication does annually, in 2011 this world-famous museum was visited by about 8.9 million people. Data is collected for more than 400 world museums. Art Newspaper has been doing these surveys since 2007 and the French museum always comes out on top. According to its deputy director Javier Pes, perhaps this is due to the fact that it is here that Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting “The Gioconda” is located. The second place is occupied by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the British Museum in London completes the top three. fourth and fifth place are two other British museums – the National Gallery and the Gallery of Contemporary Art. The sixth place is for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, seventh – the National Palace in Taipei-Taiwan, the Center Pompidou in Paris is in eighth position, in ninth – the national museum of Korea Rounding out the top ten most visited museums is the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
