What is the hidden advantage of bilingual people – study

Concordia University researchers have discovered the benefits of bilingualism, that is, speaking two languages. This reduces the risk of cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease, reports Zakon.kz.

The results of the study were published in the journal Bilingualism: Language and Knowledge.

Bilingualism has long been known to affect mental health in older adults. The study found that bilingual people with Alzheimer’s disease retained more volume in the hippocampus, a key brain region for memory and learning, compared to monolingual people. This suggests that bilingual people may be protected from disease-related brain atrophy.

“The research method involved comparing brain data from monolingual and bilingual individuals of different ages and with different cognitive states in the sample including both some people with normal cognitive abilities and those who were at risk of subjective cognitive decline or who were already suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. the study.

The results showed that in bilingual people with Alzheimer’s disease, the hippocampus remained stable in size even as the disease progressed. While monolinguals with cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease had clear signs of hippocampal atrophy, bilingual participants showed no such changes.

The study highlights that bilingualism may help maintain cognitive health and brain resilience in older adults, helping to delay the negative effects of ageing. In the future, the researchers plan to study how multilingualism affects brain networks and their function in depression.
