What is the future of the Spanish language in the US?

According to the latest published figures, there are almost 600 million speakers of our language in the world and, unlike Mandarin and Hindi, which are only spoken in one territory, Spanish is spoken in several countries on three continents.

In addition to this revealing statistic, according to data from the Census Bureau, by 2060 there will be 119 million Hispanics in the US This will be equivalent to 28.6% of the country’s population. That is, one in three inhabitants will be of Latin origin. Although, of course, this ethnic heritage is not a guarantee that everyone will know how to speak Spanish.

Will the Spanish language continue to coexist with English? That is precisely the purpose of the 1st Annual Congress of the Cervantes Institute in New Yorkwhich under the title Language and identity: linguistic variation and social equalitywill take place June 3-4 at its Midtown facility.

Richard Bueno Hudsondirector of the Instituto Cervantes New York, detailed about Spanish: “A fact that not many people know is almost 500 million of us speak it as our mother tongue. This is extremely important because English only has 350 million native speakers. Of course, what happens is that since it is the lingua franca, well, everyone uses English; but as native speakers, we are the second language in the world”.

The Cervantes Institute congress will feature plenary conferences, round tables and also includes a cultural program where an exhibition will be presented in its gallery and will even host the premiere in Spanish of a play: Hamlet in Harlem, by the Venezuelan author Alberto Ferreras.
