What is the difference between a holiday and a non-business day?

Learn how pay should be calculated if you work that day

close to International Workers’ Day, there will be a holiday for Peruvians on May 1. there are more ”free days” of this type that are used for personal activities and rest. However, depending on the company’s category, some collaborators must work.

“It is important to make the correct calculation of the payment, there is a difference between a holiday and a non-working day, which determines how much the collaborator should receive”, andexplains Jimmy Huatuco, Lead Project Manager of Buk Peru.

The difference between holidays and non-working days:

The holiday is a paid break that can be compensated with another day of substitute rest or with the payment corresponding to the work done that day. For its part, the non-working day, which is established by the Government, is compensable. That is, the employee must return the hours not worked for said break.

It should be noted that non-working days are applied in the public sector, on a mandatory basis. While in the private sector it is optional.

How should pay be calculated if you work andn a holiday?

Given the nature of the holiday, if an employee works that day and is not compensated with a substitute rest, the amount that must be paid must include the daily remuneration for the holiday plus a remuneration at a surcharge of 100% for the hours of work performed. “It is important that this payment appears on the employee’s bill,” adds Huatuco.
