Fun for the whole family: e-bike boom in Germany. Bicycles with electric drives continue to enjoy great popularity. Around two million e-bikes were sold in Germany in 2021. The two-wheeler industry association assumes that the number of e-bikes in Germany is now over eight million. Cycling with electric assistance is also worth a lot to the Germans; an average of at least 3,000 euros. It is all the more important to insure the good pieces optimally. The experts from Deutsche Vermögensberatung explain why e-bikes are not always the same, which types of insurance are advisable and why cargo bikes are currently so popular.
Not all e-bikes are the same: the types and prices are very different
The right model: In general, the term e-bike covers all bicycles that have an electric motor. A distinction is made between e-bikes, pedelecs and S-pedelecs, with the pedelec being particularly popular. With these models, the electric motor is only used if you are pedaling at the same time. Up to a speed of 25 km/h, the pedelec is still considered a bicycle. The S-Pedelec reaches higher speeds. Therefore, it is legally considered a moped, for which a license plate and a driver’s license are required in addition to motor vehicle liability insurance. You can only drive on the street. The third variant, the e-bikes, are categorized as either mopeds or mopeds, depending on when the motor switches off. Otherwise, the same regulations apply as for the S-Pedelec.
Simply practical: That’s why cargo bikes are so popular right now
The currently extremely popular cargo bikes are also available in these different categories. If you want to buy a cargo e-bike, you sometimes have to be patient before the manufacturer delivers. No wonder: especially in big cities, cargo e-bikes are a welcome alternative to the car. You save on fuel costs and the search for a parking space, you are in the fresh air, you do something for your health, and there is usually also room for the children in addition to the shopping.
Which is the best protection – which insurance?
The right protection: According to the latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office, 17,045 e-bikes were involved in accidents in 2021. If you want to be on the safe side, you should therefore seriously consider taking out insurance, preferably one that covers both theft and damage to your own bike. Because the world of e-bikes is so diverse, there are many aspects to consider when deciding on the right insurance. It is therefore advisable to consult an expert. Among other things, it can be clarified whether the household contents insurance already includes bicycle insurance or whether your bike needs another insurance, for example motor vehicle liability insurance, due to its motorization.
