[메디컬투데이=최민석 기자] Due to the structure of the body, the female vagina is a part of the body that is exposed to the outside and is susceptible to infection, and it is prone to minor diseases or recurrences, causing distress and hardship to women. Therefore, it is necessary to manage the inside of a woman’s vagina so that it is made up of only beneficial bacteria, but if the body’s immunity is low or the internal immunity of the vagina is weakened, the incidence of vaginitis increases if the inside of the vagina is infected with harmful bacteria.
The main symptoms of vaginitis include changes such as increased vaginal discharge and odor. In addition, it may cause pain such as itching, burning, and stinging, and if the infection travels up to the cervix and inflammation occurs, it may be accompanied by bleeding.
Typically, in an obstetrics and gynecology department to treat vaginitis, patients are prescribed vaginal tablets, antibiotics, antihistamines, and digestive medications to prevent indigestion caused by antibiotics. However, if vaginitis treatment is repeated several times due to frequent recurrences, treatment becomes increasingly neglected as a reluctance to take medication develops.
Accordingly, recently, methods of treating vaginitis without taking medication have been used. In the case of plasma, the sterilized water through the scrubber helps excrete bacteria, fungi, and viruses that cause inflammation and vaginitis. As a result, harmful bacteria in the vagina are treated and only the beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria survive, so it can be said to be a treatment that improves the disadvantages of taking antibiotics that affect even beneficial bacteria. In addition, a sterilization effect can be expected by irradiating LED light to the affected area, and step-by-step customized treatment is possible depending on the severity of vaginitis symptoms.
However, before treating vaginitis using plasma, STD testing should be prioritized for accurate diagnosis. STD testing helps to identify the exact cause so that it can be treated more quickly and accurately. It also helps diagnose not only vaginitis but also the causative bacteria of so-called sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, herpes, and syphilis.
Kook Jin-i, director of the Sinchon Branch of Youdaean Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, said, “If you visit an obstetrics and gynecology clinic to treat vaginitis and receive a prescription for antibiotics, not only harmful bacteria but also beneficial microorganisms in the vagina will be affected. “In the long run, antibiotics cannot be the answer to vaginitis,” he emphasized. “If you are looking for a fundamental solution, it is better to conduct an STD test and proceed with customized treatment according to the severity of symptoms.”
