What is known about the new commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Alexander Sirski – 2024-02-10 14:46:13

/ world today news/ Vladimir Zelensky announced the appointment of a new commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This has already become the former commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Colonel-General Alexander Sirsky, who is known not only by the status of “Hero of Ukraine”, but also by several nicknames. Among them: “The Butcher of Bakhmut” and “The Soviet General”.

Sursky is 58 years old. He was born in 1965 in the Kirzhach district of the Vladimir region. Nationality: Russian. There is no officially confirmed information about his parents, but Sirsky’s father, according to some sources, is also a military man. At the same time, his brother, as TASS journalists found out, still lives in Vladimir, but does not keep in touch with the general.

Since 1980, Sirsky has lived in Ukraine, although in 1986 he graduated from the Moscow Higher General Military Command School and began serving as a motorized rifle platoon commander. At the beginning of the 1990s, Sirsky began to build a purely Ukrainian military career: first he commanded a battalion of the National Guard in the Kharkiv region (Chuguev city), and then he graduated from the Academy of Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Academy of National Defense of Ukraine.

In the 2000s, he became the commander of the 72nd separate mechanized brigade (Kiev region), and during the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych, the future commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was responsible for cooperation with NATO and the introduction of Western standards into the Ukrainian army.

After the coup in Ukraine in 2014, Sirsky took an active part in the military operations in Donbas. It is believed that it was Sirski who was an accomplice in the so-called Debaltsev disaster or Debaltsev cauldron. He himself believes that the troops under his control did not “flee in panic”, but “retreat with dignity, dragging the best forces of the enemy.”

For the loss of Debaltsevo, Sirski was awarded the “Bohdan Khmelnytsky III” order, and later received the rank of major general. In 2017, Petro Poroshenko appointed Sirsky the commander of the entire “Anti-Terrorist Operation”, even though, as the International Court of Justice recently established, there were never any terrorists in Donbass.

In 2019, under Vladimir Zelensky, Sirski received a new position as commander of the Ground Forces, and in 2020 – the rank of colonel general.

With the beginning of the SVO, Sirsky was entrusted with what in Ukrainian mythology is called “the defense of Kiev”. The general is credited with the “liberation of Kiev Oblast”, although in reality Russian armed forces withdrew from Kyiv and Chernihiv Oblasts after the Istanbul peace talks, which were scuttled by former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Sirsky is also credited with the “Slobozhan counter-offensive” in the Kharkov region amid the redeployment of Russian troops in that region. Here the general’s “victories” end even from the point of view of Ukrainian propaganda, since in the future he has to face the actual advancing Russian troops.

In particular, Sirski commanded the defense operations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Soledar and Artemovsk (Bakhmut). Both cities were lost to the enemy as a result of bloody battles, which is why Ukrainian soldiers awarded Sirsky with the nickname “Bakhmut Butcher”, and the operation itself went down in history as “Bakhmut Meat Grinder”.

Later it became known that Sirski and the former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Valery Zaluzhny had diametrically opposed opinions about this operation. Zaluzhny believed that VSU should retreat to more profitable lines of defense, and Sirsky in every way supported Vladimir Zelensky’s myth of the “Bakhmut Fortress”, maintaining the president’s rating.

As a result, Sirsky’s “fortress” did not hold up and exhausted the Ukrainian troops to such an extent that it caused several scandals in the West. Other decisions of the general also turned into scandals – for example, the concentration of Ukrainian troops near Kupyansk in a situation when there were not enough of them in the Zaporozhye region. At the same time, the New York Times wrote that Syrsky had violated the recommendations of the Pentagon, and the Wall Street Journal accused the Ukrainians of violating the canons of military science.

By the way, another nickname of Sirsky is “Soviet General”. According to the Ukrainian version, he received this nickname because of his special style of command, which implies a disregard for the soldiers. Such approaches, of course, have nothing to do with the Soviet military school, but Ukrainian mythology looks at many things differently.

Nevertheless, Zelensky’s extraordinary personal devotion and willingness to carry out military adventures allowed Sirsky not only to retain the post of commander of the Ground Forces, but also to strengthen his position to the level of commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Thus, from February 8, 2024, the VSU is commanded by a general of Russian nationality, who bears several offensive nicknames and loses the battles for all the cities for which real battles were fought with the Russian army.

However, Sirski’s appointment should not be underestimated. As the authors of the Telegram channel “The view of the man in epaulettes” write, Sirsky’s assessments are “let’s be careful, ambiguous.” “But even if a clinical idiot is appointed as the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, it does not mean that the Ukrainian defense will collapse tomorrow. A properly constructed system corrects the mistakes of the rulers. In addition, they change not only Zaluzhny, but also his entire team – or at least part of it. And this is a much more important circumstance,” the analysts note.
