In hardly any other country is the private sphere as political as in the USA. In some cases, the presidential election is more about the people themselves than their parties. The families of the candidates also become part of the production. Presidential candidate Donald Trump appeared on stage with his family at the Republican nominating convention, and his granddaughter Kai gave a speech. Will it be similar for his rival Kamala Harris when she is officially chosen as the candidate at the Democratic Party convention in Chicago from August 19 to 22?
Kamala Harris’ husband Dough Emhoff was already married
Her husband Doug Emhoff is part of her production. He could become the first First Gentleman in the history of the USA. The 59-year-old grew up in New York City and moved with his family to neighboring New Jersey in 1969 and later to California. Emhoff graduated from high school in Agoura Hills, then studied at California State University and the University of Southern California. He then worked as a lawyer and specialized in law in the entertainment industry. In 2000, he opened his own law firm, which he and his business partner sold to the management consultancy Venable LLP in 2006, where he then became managing director for the region.
Harris is Emhoff’s second wife. He was previously married to producer Kerstin Emhoff for 16 years. The two divorced in 2008. In early August, details about an affair Doug Emhoff had during his first marriage became known. In a statement, he confirmed the rumors to CNN. Sea Daily Mail Emhoff is said to have had an affair with a teacher who taught his then young daughter. The woman became pregnant and, according to a close friend, “did not keep” the child.
Kamala Harris has no biological children
Doug and Kerstin Emhoff have two children together. They are supposed to call Harris “Momala” – a mixture of Mom and Kamala. 25-year-old Ella Emhoff lives in New York. She works as a designer and model and stands out for her unconventional, natural style. She has several striking tattoos, hardly wears any make-up and does not shave her armpit hair. Her partner is the GQ-Editor Sam Hine.

Her brother Cole rarely appears in public. The 29-year-old works as an executive assistant at Plan B Entertainment, an American production company founded by Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Brad Grey and Kristen Hahn. Last year, Cole married his fiancée Greenley Littlejohn.

Kamala Harris is a mother even without biological children
In an interview in 2021, Trump’s vice presidential candidate JD Vance described leading Democratic politicians – including Harris – as “childless cat women” who were unhappy with their lives. The clip from that time resurfaced after his rise to become Trump’s vice president and spread rapidly. And it was not his only statement of this kind. He has expressed his position that childless people should have less say in a democracy in various ways, which does not go down well with many Americans.
Emma Emhoff commented on Vance’s statements on Instagram: “How can you be ‘childless’ when you have such cute kids like Cole and me?” She was raised by three parents, her father, her mother Kerstin and “Momala”. Harris has no biological children. Nevertheless, she is a mother, according to Doug Emhoff’s children.
