What is different now with donating blood

Chub region. The employees of the DRK blood donation service north-east had to do good that day shortly before Christmas. 69 volunteers showed up to donate blood. Four of them were first-time donors.

The health system cannot do without blood donations, even in times of the Corona crisis. “To ensure the supply of blood reserves, 650 donations are required in Saxony every day. Nationwide there are around 15,000 donations a day, ”says Kerstin Schweiger, press spokeswoman for the DRK blood donation service North-East.

Preparations only last a few days

To make matters worse, the preparations obtained can only be kept for a few days. Even on Boxing Day in Chemnitz, Riesa or Dresden there was the possibility to donate blood. In order to guarantee the safety of the employees and helpers as well as the donors, the processes are tailored to the current conditions. It starts with the donors making an appointment via the Internet, if possible. “It’s about not having too many people on site at the same time,” explains Kerstin Schweiger.

When the donor arrives on site, he has to study a poster. Anyone who does not feel healthy or has symptoms of a respiratory infection and who has had contact with a Covid 19 patient or person who tested positive in the last two weeks may not be allowed to donate blood.

No snack after the donation

Even if the Corona warning app indicates an “increased risk” or the donor has returned from abroad within the last two weeks, a donation is not possible.

If the donor can rule out these reasons for himself, a fever is measured with a contactless thermometer. He also gets a new mouth and nose protection that must be worn while in the donor room. The doctor who is on site to donate blood also asks again about any conspicuous symptoms.

After donating blood, the volunteers have to forego the otherwise obligatory snack. For this they get a bag with a drink, sweets and also hearty things from the helpers of the local DRK association.
