Last Thursday, September 30, King Pelé, or Edson Arantes do Nascimento of his real name, received good news from the doctors. He was released from the hospital almost a month to the day after entering on August 31. “Edson Arantes do Nascimento was released from hospital on Thursday morning. His health is stable and he will undergo chemotherapy after his operation to remove a tumor in his colon on September 4th.”, Shared Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo in a statement.
Not out of the woods yet
At 80, the one who is considered by some to be the best football player of all time posted a photo on his Instagram account to give his news. “When the road is tough, celebrate every step of the way, he wrote in the caption of the photo. Focus on your happiness. It’s true that I can’t jump anymore, but lately I’ve been throwing my fist in the air more often than usual. I am very happy to come home.”
Whoever has had several health concerns in recent years is now fighting colon cancer. If the results of the biopsy of the tumor of the former three-time world football champion have not filtered, the latter is not out of the woods because he must continue his chemotherapy. “His tumor probably has aggressiveness factors, said oncologist Marco Saramago, who works in several medical centers in Rio de Janeiro, at theAFP. The good thing is that colon cancer, even with metastases, can be treated.”
The third cancer in men
This cancer is the third most common in men, after prostate and lung cancer. In women, it even occupies second place behind that of the breast. It is a disease of the cells that line the inner lining of the colon. In France, there are approximately 44,000 new cases which are detected each year with a slight prevalence of male patients (55%).
To try to cure this cancer, several treatments are possible and depend on the patient’s situation. As with Pelé, many people have to undergo an operation in order to make a temporary ostomy to divert the flow of stool and thus not interfere with internal healing. In addition, some, like Pelé, undergo chemotherapy which aims to prevent the cell division involved in this cancer. Finally, some also use drugs to destroy all cancer cells, regardless of their position in the body. If cancer is caught early, the chances of survival are high.
