What is Bipolar Mental Disorder? Know the Type and Characteristics

KOMPAS.com – There are a number of factors that cause a person to experience mental health problems. Mental health disorders bipolar become one of the most discussed mental health problems.

Lecturer Unair psychologist Nido Dipo Wardana said that bipolar disorder can be defined as a sudden and very strong increase in mood and energy that interferes with daily functions.

“It means suddenly feeling a very strong urge to do something, suddenly feeling that he is a great person, his self-esteem increases, his need for sleep and rest decreases because his energy increases,” he explained as quoted from the Unair website.

Bipolar divided into 2 types

In general, Nido explained that bipolar can be categorized into two types.

“So if the type itself is the most common, there are two types, namely bipolar disorder one and bipolar disorder two. The difference is in the severity,” said Nido.

Nido further stated that bipolar type one tends to be more severe than bipolar type two. This can be seen from the characteristics of people with bipolar disorder.

People with bipolar disorder may experience the manic episodes that are a hallmark of bipolar disorder.

“It’s called a manic episode when mood and energy disturbances last for at least a week. So it’s more severe than the hypomanic episodes that characterize bipolar disorder two,” he said.

Hypomanic episodes are not much different from manic episodes. According to Nido, a person can be said to have a hypomanic episode of bipolar disorder when the person has a mood disorder for less than a week.

“Hypomania is less severe and the occurrence does not have to be one week but at least four days in a row,” said Nido.

In addition to these two types, continued Nido, there are several other types of bipolar disorder that can be caused by several things.

“Of course there are other types of bipolar disorder, for example, bipolar disorder caused by the use of certain drugs, certain medical conditions as well. But generally bipolar is divided into two, namely bipolar one and bipolar two,” he concluded.
