What Is Bell’s Palsy, Sinovac’s Reported Side Effects in Singapore?

JAKARTA – The Singaporean authorities reported the incidence of side effects of Sinovac vaccine recipients. One of the reported serious reactions was Bell’s Palsy.

“Overall, serious side effects from the Sinovac vaccine will continue to be observed after vaccination,” the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) wrote.

Bell’s Palsy is a sudden paralysis of the facial muscles. In most cases, this condition is temporary and can improve significantly within weeks.

This side effect has indeed been reported several times in studies related to severe reactions to COVID-19 vaccines. Bell’s palsy is a rare and reversible side effect. In general, more than 90 percent of cases of Bell’s palsy, not specific for the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, resolve within 9 months of corticosteroid treatment.

Research conducted by experts in Hong Kong also found a risk of Bell’s Palsy in Sinovac vaccine recipients, but this is rare. They emphasized that the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine still far outweigh the side effects.

“Our study shows a small increase in the risk of Bell’s palsy associated with the CoronaVac vaccination. However, Bell’s palsy remains a rare adverse event, mostly temporary,” said researcher Chi Kei Wong, PhD, of the University of Hong Kong. .
