The swirling mass of plasma 620 miles wide that churns for hours in Earth’s upper atmosphere, in the form of a shower of electrons.
So, what is a space storm?
Researchers call the disturbance a space storm because it resembles and behaves like a rotating storm system that routinely hits coastlines around the world.
However, until now, their whereabouts are unknown.
“It was totally unexpected,” said Larry Lyons, a professor of atmospheric and marine science at the University of California, Los Angeles.
