Jakarta –
Tesla is rumored to be setting up a factory in Indonesia, to be precise in Batang, Central Java. This was stated by the Minister of Investment / Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia.
If realized, Indonesia will become the third country outside the United States to have a Tesla factory. Currently, Tesla has factories in the United States, China and Germany. Some of them are factories nicknamed the Gigafactory. Will the Tesla factory also build a Gigafactory in Indonesia?
For those who don’t know, Tesla currently has five Gigafactories around the world. Three of them are in the United States, the other two Gigafactories are in China and Germany.
The name Gigafactory is believed to represent the size of the Tesla factory. Giga is a unit of measure that represents the number of billions. Giga in Greek also means giant. The name Gigafactory means giant factory.
Tesla’s first gigafactory was built in Nevada, United States. There, Tesla produced electric motors to drive electric cars, and made batteries. Then, Tesla rebuilt Gigafactory 2 in New York which produces solar roofs, solar panels, and electrical components for superchargers.
The third gigafactory was built in Shanghai, China. There, Tesla manufactures the Model 3 and Model Y. This year, Tesla began operating the fourth Gigafactory in Germany that manufactures the Tesla Model Y and batteries. Finally, the fifth Gigafactory, which is located in Austin, Texas, produces the Tesla Model Y, lithium-ion batteries and the Tesla Cybertruck.
In Indonesia, according to Bahlil, Tesla’s factory investment will be made this year. The cooperation involves two fields, namely batteries and electric cars. Bahlil himself has not disclosed the investment value that Tesla will invest in Indonesia.
It is possible that a factory in Indonesia will also become a Gigafactory if it produces electric cars and batteries. According to Inside EVs, all future Tesla Gigafactories will build their own batteries and electric vehicles.
