On April 25, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine honored the memory of one of the twelve apostles, Evangelist Mark, in a new style. According to the old style, on the holiday today, Venerable Vasyl the Confessor, bishop of Paria, is honored.
Our ancestors on this national holiday expected the final return of migratory birds – swallows, cuckoos, nightingales and swifts. Seeing these birds today or hearing their singing is considered a lucky omen. It is a very good sign if birds nest near the house – its inhabitants will be happy and friendly.
On the holiday of April 25, women collected the first spring edible herbs – cherry tree, honeydew, sorrel, dandelion and especially nettle. Pancakes, pies, casseroles and nettle soup were prepared from the last hostess. All the early greens of this day were considered twice as useful.
They also made threads and fabric from nettles, brewed nettle tea and made tinctures. And dry nettle branches were hung around the house to protect the house from evil spirits and diseases.
The peasants in the fields began to sow vegetables and plant potatoes. Before work, the ground was checked: a layer of soil was thrown from waist height. If it remains a solid lump when it falls, then the soil is still too wet and it is too early to sow. And if it crumbled into many identical lumps, then it’s time to start sowing.
On the national holiday of April 25, our ancestors went to the bathhouse, where they washed off all the negativity and also fanned themselves with birch and oak brooms. People believed that hot water procedures on this day would remove fatigue and tension from the body.
