On April 1, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine commemorates Saint Mary of Egypt and Saint Gerontius of Kyiv-Pechersky in a new style. According to the old style, martyrs Chrysanth and Darina are commemorated on the holiday today.
Our ancestors expected warming on the national holiday of April 1. In the second month of spring, the rivers overflowed, the ice and snow finally melted, and the first vegetation appeared. Roads became impassable due to wet weather, so the date is known as Daryna Brudna.
April was a difficult period for Ukrainians. The winter supplies have already run out, and the new harvest has not yet come down. People risked being left without hay, firewood and food. In order to avoid such a situation, the peasants tried to buy a supply of food in the city or to use household supplies more economically. It was considered a very unlucky sign if there were no supplies left in the house in advance.
On this national holiday, women were engaged in bleaching linen and bed linen. The fabric was illuminated in the last remnants of snow, which in ancient times could lie until April. Young people ended the period of weddings and parties, and helped their parents to sow the garden.
April 1 is a good date for collecting birch sap. Also, any planting and sowing work will go well on this day.
