In some people, the feet deform over time and form a ball toe, the so-called hallux valgus. Women are particularly affected. But the toe does not always have to be operated on.

With the heel high up, the feet are stored completely unnaturally and often squeezed. So it can happen that the big toe (Hallux) gets tilted. Doctors speak of a bale toe, which is technically called hallux valgus.

In hallux valgus, the bone tissue and soft tissues such as tendons and muscles on the metatarsus are deformed. This will move the big toe joint. “There is a bony bulge on the inner edge of the foot below the big toe,” explains orthopedic surgeon Ramin Nazemi from Essen. It pushes uncomfortably against the shoe. If left untreated, the pain becomes more severe over the years.

Hallux valgus: possible causes

Several factors usually play a role in the development of hallux valgus. “In 60 to 70 percent of all cases, those affected have a family-related disposition,” explains Nazemi. If there is then the tendency to a sagging connective tissue – and high heels -, deformations on the feet are likely.

If you notice that a foot changes, you should not wait so long to visit a doctor or podiatrist. Because untreated, hallux valgus not only affects the feet. “The changed gait due to the deformity can cause pain in the knees and back,” warns Tatjana Pfersich from the Association of German Podiatrists.

Toe spreader and muscle training

“In the early stages of hallux valgus, toe spreaders and targeted foot muscle training can relieve symptoms,” says orthopedic surgeon Mellany Galla. She is chair of the Society for Foot and Ankle Surgery (GFFC). Toe spreaders are soft pads made of gel or silicone that are inserted between the big toe and neighboring toes. So the toe is brought from the valgus to the normal position.

Orthopedic insoles don’t help

Special splints that are attached to the feet also help to bring the big toe back into its natural position. “Orthopedic insoles help, however hallux valgus Not at all, “says orthopedic surgeon Nazemi. He also relies on targeted foot muscle training. The exercises are simple and can be practiced from time to time. For example, you can use your toes to lift pens lying on the floor. Toe spreading also helps.

Surgery as a last resort

Only when aids such as toe spreaders, bandages and splints, as well as foot gymnastics bring no relief, can patients consider an operation. In principle, the procedure involves a correction to the bone and soft tissues. “It is important that a bandage shoe is worn consistently for six to eight weeks after the procedure so that the corrected bone does not break,” emphasizes Nazemi.

Run barefoot regularly

The best thing is, of course, if it doesn’t come to that. If you want to do something to prevent hallux valgus, you should walk barefoot as much as possible. Regular foot exercises also help to keep your feet fit. In everyday life it is best to wear flat shoes that offer enough space for your feet. However, women generally do not have to do without high-heeled shoes, soothes Nazemi. In his view, there is nothing to be said against it if they are worn for a short time – for example for a festive occasion.
