TV-watching Flanders got to know Huysentruyt in the VTM program ‘Lekker Thuis’, of which more than 1,000 episodes were broadcast. From 2004, the flamboyant chef with a heavy West Flemish accent was given the leading role in his own cooking program ‘SOS Piet’. In it he visited people’s homes to help them in the kitchen, and concluded each episode with the question: ‘what have we learned today’. An iconic phrase that would haunt him for the rest of his career. “There were a lot of star chefs who thought my work with SOS Piet was ridiculous”, said the chef recently in the TV program ‘Buurman, what are you doing now?’ to Cath Luyten. “I had already proved something, I had stars.” Two even.
Huysentruyt has never made it a secret that he wants to “say goodbye in style” to his TV audience. That goodbye seems to be coming now. On December 7, he celebrates his sixtieth birthday with one last time ‘SOS Piet’.
