Party, good mood and drinking alcohol: For many revelers, this goes hand in hand at carnival or carnival time. But the exuberance can be over quickly – for example, if someone or something is injured. After all, not every insurance company pays for accidents under the influence of alcohol. Ingo Aulbach from the Federal Association of German Insurance Merchants (BVK) points this out.

What applies in the event of injuries or accidents?

Private accident insurance companies, for example, usually do not pay for permanent damage caused by an accident under the influence of alcohol. According to Aulbach, only so-called comfort insurances still pay. Anyone who causes damage to third parties or the property of third parties is usually protected by personal liability insurance.

In principle, drinking alcohol is not a problem here, says Aulbach. The accident protection of private liability insurance only fails if someone is intentionally harmed.

Asking the insurance manager helps

If you want to be on the safe side, you should ask your insurance specialist before the move or the party which regulation applies. For example, if something breaks during a carnival parade due to camels flying around, or if someone is injured, this is regularly regulated by organizer liability insurance.

However, according to Aulbach, compensation for pain and suffering cannot be demanded for every small scratch and for every pair of glasses. According to the insurance expert, courts have already ruled in the past that spectators who take part in events with “throwing missiles” must accept minor injuries.
