What happens if the government violates the GDPR and fines itself? – IT Pro – News

The Tax and Customs Administration has been fined for its role in the allowance scandal. It is the highest fine that the Dutch Data Protection Authority has ever imposed, but at the same time it does not feel like a punishment. After all, it concerns our own tax money and our own government. How does it work if the government receives a GDPR fine?

To make one thing clear right away: the fine goes to the Dutch treasury and not to the Dutch Data Protection Authority itself. The AP has been around for years quite understaffed and actually wants to double the number of employees. The budget for the Dutch Data Protection Authority last year was 26,274,528 euros. That is compared to other European regulators quite high, but still not enough to handle the growing stream of complaints and reports. The fine that the AP on Tuesday gave to the tax authorities would be no less than ten percent of the annual budget, but the watchdog should not put the money in its own pocket.
