Sports journalist Bob Costa revealed he is retiring after being the voice of MLB play-by-play commentary for more than 40 years. First reported by The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, his retirement has been in the planning for over a year. His contract with TBS expired at the end of the season after commentating games on both TBS Sports and MLB Network in recent baseball seasons. Here’s what happened to Bob Costas and where the 72-year-old legend is going after his phased retirement.
Where is Bob Costas going after retiring from baseball play-by-play?
Even though Bob Costas will no longer play baseball play-by-play, he will not completely retire from baseball and will continue his work with the MLB Network.
The last game he covered for play-by-play was for the American League Division Series between the Yankees and Royals.
Considering that Costas has had an extensive career as a sportscaster, having covered other sports such as basketball, football, boxing, NASCAR, golf and the Olympics, it is possible that he will still provide commentary for those sports in the future.
Costas has been recognized for his broadcasting career, winning the 2018 Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame.
In 2021, the sports interviewer became the host of the HBO series of the same name Back on the Record with Bob Costas. The program featured four episodes each year which saw him interview various names in sport and pop culture. The series was canceled after two seasons.
