What happened to 9 thousand workers of a Japanese car manufacturer

Jakarta

One of the Japanese car giants, Nissan, will lay off 9,000 workers worldwide. The major step is aimed at reducing global production due to the company’s sluggish car sales in China and the United States.

According to Reuters, on Saturday (9/11/2024), the number of cuts is approximately equal to 6.7% of the company’s total workforce worldwide, which reached 133,580 people. Through these cuts, Nissan can reduce the company’s global production capacity by up to 20%.

In addition, this cut is even more important for Nissan to reduce costs by US $ 2.6 billion or Rp 40.74 trillion (exchange rate Rp. 15,672 / US dollar) in the fiscal year 2024 amid recession in sales. in China and the US.

In addition, Nissan also cut its annual profit outlook by 70% to 150 billion yen or US$975 million (Rp. 15.28 trillion). This is the second time they have lowered their estimate this year.

This situation occurred because there was a sharp decline in Nissan sales in the country of Bamboo Curtains due to the dominance of electric car manufacturer BYD and other local brands in the region.

However, there may be a worse problem for Nissan in the US, where they do not have a hybrid car product that can compete in Uncle Sam’s market. This situation is different from the Japanese competitor company, Toyota, which has succeeded in getting an increase in the demand for hybrid cars.

“Nissan did not misrepresent the demand for hybrid cars in the United States. We did not expect HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicles) to increase this quickly,” CEO Makoto Uchida said at a press conference.

“We started to understand this trend towards the end of last fiscal year,” he explained, adding that the company did not make any changes to its main hybrid vehicle models and left them in the US market.
