2023 – Imprisoned women’s rights activist Narges Mohammadi from Iran receives the Nobel Peace Prize. She is being honored “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights.”
2004 – Contrary to American intelligence claims, Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. It had neither chemical and biological weapons stockpiles nor a serious nuclear weapons program, according to the report submitted by US weapons inspector Charles Duelfer in Washington.
1979 – Pope John Paul II becomes the first pope to visit the US capital Washington.
1934 – The Catalan Prime Minister Luis Companys proclaims the independence of Catalonia within a Spanish Federal Republic. After ten hours, the Spanish army suppressed the uprising. She arrests the Catalan government and its leader, and Catalonia loses its statute of autonomy, which it had received only two years earlier.
