What format in Paris?

It was in a joint interview with Le Monde and Nouvelles calédoniennes that Sébastien Lecornu specified the terms of this meeting in Paris. Were invited to talk about the institutional future with the President of the Republic, Sonia Backes, Thierry Santa, Pierre Frogier, Philippe Gomès, Philippe Dunoyer for the Loyalists. Roch Wamytan, Paul Néaoutyine, Jacques Lalié, Daniel Goa and Victor Tutugoro for the separatists. Regarding the organization, the Minister of Overseas Territories argues that “we are reaching the end of this agreement, whatever the outcome and that is why, with the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, we believe that the time has come to meet again, as we had met in October 2020, during my trip to the territory ”. For Sébastien Lecornu, the goal is “to deepen our last exchanges and to discuss the future of New Caledonia”.

The program

The Minister of Overseas France specifies that the beach from May 25 to June 3 was chosen because the Government will be fully available. “This will involve, among other things, a sequence with the President of the Republic who will meet the Caledonian delegations (…) New questions are before us. During this working week, we would like to take stock of the first two consultations, discuss new topical issues and look to the future ”. Sébastien Lecornu specifies that basically, “it is during the five-year term of Emmanuel Macron that we assume the end of the Nouméa Accord with two consultations already. It is now up to us to work on this very particular exercise: to consider the consequences of yes and no, which until now everyone had been careful not to do. It’s a moment of truth ”.

Consequences of yes or no: the right to know

Sébastien Lecornu also gave his opinion on the date of the third consultation. For him, the Government will set it according to a schedule which is already tight, but he specifies, which is important, that “there must be no overlap between the official referendum and presidential campaigns”. Finally, the Minister specifies, in accordance with the commitment he made when he came to the territory, that “we must first work to explain the stakes of this choice: it is the famous work of yes and no. to which I tirelessly appeal to Caledonian political leaders. This work must be completed before the third consultation. Caledonians have the right to know why they are voting! “
