What does the orange or green dot in iOS 14 mean?

Have you already sent your iPhone to iOS 14 installed? Then you might wonder why an orange or green dot sometimes appears at the top right. That is not a bug: the colored dot warns that the camera or microphone of your iPhone is being used.

Orange or green dot in iOS 14

Apple cares a lot about the privacy of the user and with iOS 14, your iPhone has become more privacy-friendly again. If an iOS app uses the camera or microphone, you will now see a green or orange dot in the status bar. This is what they mean:

  • Green dot: an iOS app uses your iPhone’s camera.
  • Orange dot: An iOS app is using your iPhone’s microphone.

So every time you see the green dot in iOS 14, it means that your iPhone’s camera is being used. You see it, for example, when you activate the camera to take a selfie, or when you make video calls. The orange dot appears when sending a voice message or a conversation with Siri.

Which app is it?

Do you see an orange or green dot, but have no idea which app is causing this? Then pull out the Control Panel. At the top of the screen, your iPhone indicates which app has (recently) used your camera or microphone.

With the function, Apple wants to prevent apps from using the iPhone camera or microphone in the background without your knowledge. Facebook, among others, has been guilty of this in the past. If there is no bubble, you can be sure that apps will not secretly record conversations or images.
