The Mexican team you almost certainly have your ticket to the Qatar World Cup after pulling out a 1-0 win on Sunday’s visit to Honduras.
With this result, El Tri reached 25 points to consolidate itself in third place in the Concacaf Octagonal Final, which distributes three direct tickets and a playoff to the World Cup that will start on November 18.
A header from Edson Álvarez in the 70th minute gave the victory to the Mexican team in San Pedro Sula.
Mexico will face El Salvador on Wednesday at the Azteca Stadium in the last qualifying day.
Canada, with its victory against Jamaica by 4-0, and the United States, with its 5-1 victory over Panama, secured their presence in Qatar.
Costa Rica, with 22 points, is fourth in the standings and will close its participation by hosting the Stars and Stripes team.
Only a loss to El Salvador, and Costa Rica’s victory by four goals, would deprive Mexico of a direct ticket to the World Cup.
If that combination were to happen, the Ticos would go straight to Qatar while El Tri would have to seek to reach the World Cup via playoff against a team from Oceania.
The playoff will be played on June 13 or 14 in a single match in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
New Zealand or Solomon Islands will be the representative of Oceania in the repechage.
The draw for the groups for the World Cup will take place on Friday, April 1.
