Jakarta –
Better.com CEO Vishal Garg suddenly fired 900 of his employees via Zoom recently. The former employee of the home ownership service provider, Christian Chapman, told of his experience of being fired.
He previously worked as an underwriter at Better.com. Little did he know that a call from his boss would be his last as an employee of the online mortgage company.
“If you receive this call, you are part of the unlucky bunch that was dismissed,” Garg said at last Wednesday’s one-way webinar, which lasted three minutes. detik.com from CNN, Wednesday (12/8/2021).
The call ended abruptly and took Chapman by surprise. He who was the sole breadwinner for his 7 family members was used to his boss’ anger, but the events this time were unexpected.
Chapman started sending messages on the company’s Slack channel asking what happened when the screen went black. He lost access to his computer, phone, email, and company messages. He uses Facebook Messenger to reach out to his colleagues.
Garg had promised a follow-up email from HR, but employee access was terminated. Chapman finally received the communication via his private email a few hours later.
“It was a surreal moment. It was one of those things you couldn’t believe was going to happen,” Chapman said.
In fact, Chapman, who has worked in the mortgage business for nearly 20 years, says he recently completed a positive performance review call with his manager.
“I realized after my first meeting that I had to stay mute and put my earphones on, because I have five kids and I don’t want them to hear that kind of language,” Chapman said.
Chapman says he has now gone through four layoffs at various mortgage companies, but none as blunt and impartial as this.
