There is no job site for members of the Senate. They are elected by the members of the Provincial Council, who in turn are elected by us. In principle, the 75 new members of the Senate will remain in office for four years.

In Wat verdient een… bespreken we een beroep dat in het nieuws was – prominent of juist onopvallend, maar in ieder geval als een onmisbaar onderdeel van dat nieuws.
Membership of the Senate is a part-time position. Most members have another function, paid or unpaid, next to it. They do receive compensation for part-time work in the room. This has been set at more than 34,000 euros gross for this year, including holiday allowance and year-end bonus.
In addition to the income, members of the Senate, just like other administrators, are also offered all sorts of things. You can view that online. The gifts range from an asparagus dinner to a 4.5 liter bottle of Don Papa rum. Trips are also reported. These range from a trip to the European Parliament to a visit to a real estate fair in Cannes in a private plane at the expense of Harry Mens.
Members of the Senate have to read a lot
“Members of the Senate usually end up on the list through scouting committees,” says Paul Luijten. He was a member of the Senate for twelve years and is now a member of the board of the Association of Former Senators. “People who are interested ring the bell themselves or you will be asked.” These people are usually already members of a political party.
According to Luijten, you used to be asked for the Senate as a reward for services rendered. “That hasn’t been the case for a long time. Now it’s more about quality and diversity.” Quality is mainly related to the policy areas where knowledge is required. And with diversity, it is also checked that there are not too many people from the Randstad.
What you, as a member of the Senate, should be able to do especially well, according to him, is reading. “You have to read bills, read the advice of the Council of State about it, read the documents from the House of Representatives with the amendments. So you have to be able to do that and like it.” You should also read the input of your colleagues.
The Senate must review bills that have been adopted by the House of Representatives. If the Senate has also agreed, a law will come into effect.
Good for your network
Much more time is spent on all the reading and discussions with stakeholders, group meetings in the country and other meetings than the one meeting day a week that is officially part of the duties. “The compensation amounts to about a quarter of that of a member of the House of Representatives.” That is a full-time job.
Those who are in a small faction have to work harder for the same remuneration. After your time as a member of the Senate, you will still benefit from this, Luijten believes. “It’s very good for your network. You get to know people from all over the country. It doesn’t make you any better financially.”
