I was here for a long time, now I write more on Instagram (I never had the app installed for many years) – Instagram belongs to Facebook and is huge. Unlike here, comments are deleted via algorithms and not even manually checked.
In my case, I wrote “it’s bad that another user calls it gay when a man gives another man flowers” – auto-deleted due to spam/community guidelines. While the top comment “gaaaaayyyyy” (written like that, the algorithm doesn’t recognize it as “gay”) remains.
I find arbitrary or automatic moderation to be a big problem everywhere on social media. It leads to censorship and language restrictions. Because if I keep posting, I’ll be blocked. Or have I written too much in a short space of time? Does the app decide how much I’m allowed to talk on social media? You’re left in the dark about it. Even on Gutefrage itself, you SOMETIMES don’t know why something was deleted and have to wait weeks for an email response.
The only website I know where you can write freely is Reddit. But it’s in English and divided into 1000s of subreddits with their own bubbles. I like the concept better elsewhere.
How do you see it? What could be changed?
