Maduro has ruled Venezuela for more than a decade, a period marked by harsh criticism of his administration and accusations of authoritarianism.

Vicente Fox, who was president of Mexico between 2000 and 2006, was quick to express his discontent with Maduro’s re-election.

Fox, a member of the National Action Party (PAN), called Maduro a “dictator” and questioned the length of his mandate. In a post on the social network X (formerly known as Twitter), Fox shared an image that merges the faces of Maduro and López Obrador, suggesting a similarity in the governing styles of both leaders.

“A democracy will never be functional without the checks and balances and autonomy of the powers, but equally of the autonomous organisms. This is the true path to dictatorship as happened in Venezuela and Cuba,” wrote Fox in X.

Fox’s criticism has been answered by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. From the National Palace, López Obrador questioned the participation of Fox and former President Felipe Calderón in observing the Venezuelan elections, pointing out that both opposed a recount of votes in Mexico in 2006.

López Obrador stressed the importance of waiting for the vote count to be announced and criticized interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, who is the virtual president-elect of Mexico, has also lashed out at Vicente Fox.

Sheinbaum called Fox a “traitor to democracy” and questioned his moral authority to criticize the elections in Venezuela. Sheinbaum recalled that Fox was part of the impeachment process against López Obrador in 2006 and that his presidency did not meet the promised expectations of change.

Suspension of flights to Venezuela

The controversy surrounding Vicente Fox intensified when he revealed that his flight to Venezuela to observe the elections had been suspended.

Fox claimed that his aircraft was unable to take off due to a space block, which prevented him from participating as an observer. The former president used this situation to reiterate his criticism of the Maduro regime and the electoral process in Venezuela.
