What did the Prague Fashion Week bring and what designers are worth watching


Natalie Dufková

Natalie Dufková is a student of the last year of master’s studies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in the Studio of Clothing and Footwear of Professor Liběna Rochová. According to her own words, this year’s collection was romantically surreal, purposefully girly and with a strong relationship to traditions and nature.

Instead of the usual oversized forms, jackets and other fashion objects, Dufková turned her attention to large evening gowns for the first time. Prim in the new collection plays monochrome silk, chiffon, satin and upcycled damask from a dowry after great-grandmother in shades of fuchsia, old pink or purple.

Zoltán Tóth

The young designer Zoltán Tóth presented himself at the Mercedes-Benz Prague Fashion Week in collaboration with the Levi´s brand, with which he collaborated back in 2017. Some models therefore included artfully quilted denim.

The clothes were very well made and wearable. The sparse collection included an impressive blue satin gown with a bare back, but also pleated crop tops or, for example, a velvet emerald costume.

Jan Černý

Jan Černý was the only one to present his collection for the S / S 21 season at a special location, on the banks of the Vltava on Veslařský ostrov. So far, it has been his largest collection of 34 men’s looks.

The show was also unique in that, unlike other shows, it was again open to the public. The democratization of fashion is an important topic for Černý.

“2020 is the beginning of a new romantic era for me. I see it as reliving history. In the nineteenth century, during classicism – the domination of reason and education – romanticism suddenly came. The desire to return more to the roots. Finding out that reason alone is not happiness. We are still experiencing it today. The young generation is once again gravitating to nature, going to cottages, on trips. We will deviate from technology. We experience and discover nature more intensively, “says Jan Černý about the inspiration for the new collection.

It is the rediscovery of nature and its observation in greater detail that permeates the entire collection. Blurred prints of nature in vivid colors are photographs taken by Černý during the spring covid pandemic. The collection is dominated by strong colors, led by orange, green, yellow, blue or pink. But there were also traditional men’s suits in black.

Jakub Polanka

The third day of Fashion Week was dominated by Jakub Polanka, who is one of the established names of the Czech fashion scene. The alpha and omega of his work is editing. The tousled silhouettes alternated with sober, elongated dresses with an emphasis on the line.

The color range of the collection consisted primarily of gray and royal blue. Even so, the models didn’t look boring. On the contrary, Polanka once again proved that he can work with various materials and cuts so that even a monochrome model will appeal not only to the spectator of the show.

In addition, unlike many other designers, they do not try to suppress femininity on women’s models, but rather emphasize it.

Michaela Hriňová

The inspiration for Michaela Hriňová’s new collection called “Burn the witch” became witches, to whom she attributes non-standard beauty, freedom, secrecy, strength and courage.

“Witches are women whom men were afraid of because they were not afraid to be themselves, they were not afraid to be non-standard, and they did not allow themselves to be bound by time. They are femme fatale, which are incomprehensible, their appearance incredibly captivating, as if they have supernatural abilities, ”says Hriňová.

The collection was therefore carried in dark muted tones, which was complemented by a contrasting yellow color. There were also formal dresses and women’s suits, but the greatest attention was paid to winter uppers.
