On January 30, the beloved Soviet and Russian actor died Leonid Vyacheslavovich Kuravlev. This is reported by the Telegram channel “112”. The legendary 85-year-old artist spent his last days in the Moscow hospice named after V.V. Millionshchikova. He was transferred there from the intensive care unit of the city clinical hospital No. 40 in Kommunarka on the 20th of January.
Leonid Kuravlev became famous for his role in the film Vasily Shukshin “Such a guy lives”, where he brilliantly played the role of the driver Pashka Kolokolnikov. The actor starred in more than 200 films. Among them are “Ivan Vasilievich changes his profession”, “Afonya”, “The most charming and attractive”, “They report from Lebyazhye”, “Your son and brother”, “The Golden Calf”, “The life and amazing adventures of Robinson Crusoe” and many others. He received the title of People’s Artist in 1977.
What caused the death of Leonid Kuravlev?
Leonid Kuravlev was seriously ill for a long time. As it became known to the media, the artist was admitted to the hospital in Kommunarka on January 5 this year with suspected coronavirus. Tests for COVID-19, which he passed on January 6 and 9, showed a negative result. At the same time, Kuravlev’s temperature was elevated, and the saturation was at the level of 89.6%. Later, doctors performed an emergency stomach operation on Kuravlev – a gastrostomy, Izvestia writes.
On January 17, it was reported that the artist was in intensive care in a stable serious condition. He underwent tomography of the lungs, which revealed a significant increase in the area of damage to the respiratory system. Kommunarka doctors diagnosed Kuravlev with pneumonia, from which he was able to be cured, writes the Baza Telegram channel.
However, after examination by neurologists, Kuravlev was diagnosed with cerebrovascular disease (CVD), which affects blood vessels and leads to impaired blood circulation in the brain. In this regard, the actor was transferred to a hospice.
“In 85-year-old Leonid Kuravlev, a persistent decrease in cognitive activity was revealed with the loss, to one degree or another, of previously acquired knowledge and practical skills. Violations of memory and speech, thought process and memories. Dysfunction of swallowing food. The consciousness of the artist is at the level of superficial stunning, ”a source in health care told Komsomolskaya Pravda.
On January 30, 2022, the seriously ill actor died in a hospice from cardiac arrest.
“Yes, (Kuravlev was – ed.) in the hospice, where he was transferred from Kommunarka. They say it was expected. In addition to mixed dementia, he had cerebrovascular disease, his brain was dying. The reason is cardiac arrest, ”a source from the FAN agency said.
What do you remember about Leonid Kuravlev?
Leonid Kuravlev was born on October 8, 1936 in Moscow into a working-class family. His mother, Valentina Kuravlevawas a hairdresser. And the father – Vyacheslav Kuravlev – worked as a mechanic at the Salyut aircraft factory.
Leonid Kuravlev in 1953 applied to the acting department at VGIK. He thought that the exams there would be simple, so he hardly prepared. And he failed the entrance test.
For the next two years, Kuravlev worked in the Optic artel, which was located not far from his home. The company produced lenses for film cameras and still cameras.
Leonid Kuravlev again tried to enter VGIK in 1955. This time he prepared for a long time and received excellent marks in the exams. The future artist was enrolled in the workshop of an actor and theater director Boris Bibikov. They entered there Svetlana Druzhinina and Sofiko Chiaureli.
In his first year, Kuravlev studied poorly, he was almost expelled for incompetence, but in his last years he was among the best and made his film debut.
In 1960, Kuravlev played the sailor Kamushkin in Mikhail Schweitzer’s historical-revolutionary film Midshipman Panin.
The first film success came to the actor four years later, after the main role in Shukshin’s film “Such a Guy Lives” (1964). In it, the actor played the main role – the driver Pavel Kolokolnikov. At the Venice Film Festival in 1964, the tape won the “Lion of St. Mark” award as the best film for children.
One of Kuravlev’s most famous characters is the plumber Afanasy Borshchov in Athos (1975), directed by Georgy Daneliya. The picture became the leader of the Soviet distribution of that year: 62 million viewers watched it. At the IX All-Union Film Festival in Frunze, the film received a special prize. And two years later, in 1977, for “merits in the field of Soviet cinema” Leonid Kuravlev was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the RSFSR.
Kuravlev is also known for his roles in such films and TV series as Viy, Without Witnesses, Big Sister, Golden Calf, Seventeen Moments of Spring, They Led a Chest of Drawers Down the Street, Turkish Gambit. His last film work was the role of Father Leonty in the Russian-American comedy All This Jam by Alexander Andranikyan (2015).
Family
With his wife – an English teacher, director of one of the Moscow schools Nina Kuravleva – Leonid Kuravlev met in childhood. They met at a skating rink in 1952 and married eight years later. The couple lived together for more than 50 years – until the death of Kuravlev’s wife in 2012. The marriage produced two children.
Actor’s eldest daughter Ekaterina (born in 1962) graduated from the Shchukin School and, together with her father, starred in the comedy The Most Charming and Attractive. And the son of Kuravlev Basil (born in 1978) became a teacher, candidate of economic sciences.
