Princess Margaret, as experts recall, collected jewelry with rubies. Even the engagement ring presented to her by photographer Anthony Armstrong-Johnson was with a ruby stone.

“Princess Margaret’s ruby and diamond flower brooch is a spectacular piece of jewelry that the princess has worn all her life. The oval ruby stamen and leaf ornament were made by Cartier in 1948 as a clip brooch, but were later converted into a pin brooch. One of of the most precious stones in the world, rubies are excellent stones to have on hand if you are in the midst of an argument or conflict, which was often the case with Princess Margaret. I value the brooch at around $50,000,” said one expert.
Princess Margaret wore the brooch at the Epsom Derby in May 1955, at the London premiere of Doctor Zhivago in April 1966 and at the Royal European Preview of the musical Applause in London.
But after the princess’s death in 2002, her children, David and Sarah, held a sale of their mother’s estate in order to settle an inheritance tax bill. More than 800 family heirlooms were put up for auction then, including Princess Margaret’s wedding tiara, which fetched a staggering £926,000 ($1,115,274).
And the ruby brooch, which proved incredibly popular, sold for a whopping £108,000 (over $130,000).
