Leon, Guanajuato The mayor of León, Alejandra Gutiérrez Campos, traveled to the city of Boston to participate in the event Visionaries Summit of Accelerator Citiesheld at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with the participation of Harvard University, where the Participatory Budget program implemented during its first three-year period was presented.

According to a bulletin announcing Gutiérrez Campos’ presentation, she was invited to participate in the event along with 20 mayors from all over Mexicowho shared their best practices in municipal management. The forum was focused on discussing strategies to accelerate urban development through technology and the alliance between governments and private initiatives.

In her presentation, the municipal leader described the participatory budget program as a exercise of direct democracy, civic appropriation of public spaces and promotion of social coexistencewhich allows citizens to get involved in the execution of public works for their environment through proposals and voting.

“The most valuable thing is that we have learned that citizens have many things to contribute, many ideas and projects that completely change the dynamic and that also serve three purposes: first, you empower citizens, second, you fulfill their dreams and third, you generate a dynamic of creating a community that you will not find anywhere else,” he said during his presentation.

According to the Social Communication area, the mayor traveled since August 13 to participate in the forum, and his return is scheduled for this Thursday, after having concluded his presentation.
