Irpina (Kyiv region), which was under the control of the Russian army, has become one of the examples of the horrific crimes of the invaders – both the massacre of the local population and the destruction of civilian infrastructure. However, Russian troops caused enormous damage to the environment, destroying centuries-old forests.
This is reported by CNN, referring to the executive director of the Kiev Environmental Initiative Center Natalia Gozak.
According to her, the consequences of the Russian war against Ukraine will be felt for decades to come.
“When you see crimes against humanity, incredible atrocities, the killing of people, torture, rape, of course, we are not thinking about the environmental problems caused by war. “It pays for all crimes, not just killing people, but also killing our future and damaging the well – being of our children,” she said.
The centre’s staff say the huge amount of missiles, explosives and other weapons, as well as the military technology used in the war, are not the only cause of the pollution. Mass burials carried out without regard to environmental safety can also lead to long-term pollution of groundwater and soil.
