The CLCV consumer association warns about the health risks associated with these drinks, which mainly target young people. It calls in particular for a new marketing framework.

Energy drinks represent in France a turnover of 250 million euros for the year 2020. Free access in supermarkets, they are supposed to increase physical and mental performance, and mainly target young people.
The consumer association recommends drinking this type of soda in moderation. Of the ten drinks studied in the report, eight have a Nutri-Score D or E. The CLCV calls for a stricter framework, in particular at the level of labeling, but also by limiting the content of caffeine and taurine.

The equivalent of 3 espressos

The CLCV is also calling for an ANSES study on this subject, to assess the short and long-term effects of these energy drinks. As a reminder, in 2013, ANSES warned of the combined consumption of these drinks and alcohol; especially in adolescents and pregnant women. On Tuesday April 6, the Journal de Montréal also published an article entitled “I am 24 years old and I have no more teeth”, where a former energy drink addict calls for a ban in Canada.
