What COVID-19 tests do you need to travel?

It depends on where you go.

In an effort to limit the spread of the newer variants of the virus, many countries require arriving travelers to show a recent negative test.

The United States, for example, accepts results of tests that detect the genetic material of the virus – considered the most reliable – or of rapid tests that look for viral proteins called antigens. The tests must be three days prior to leaving for the United States.

Healthcare professionals often perform more sensitive laboratory tests on samples taken with nasal swabs, which take a day or more to give the result. Quick tests take 15 to 30 minutes and are increasingly being used in testing centers, offices, schools, and residences. Some rapid tests allow users to collect samples at home.

With each test, the United States is required to submit electronic or paper proof of the negative result to a medical laboratory. That means that even if you plan to have the rapid test, you will probably need to see a medical professional who can do the documentation.

England has a similar system and accepts results from both types of tests. But the health authorities there impose extra requirements such as that the tests meet some precision conditions. Travelers are urged to check that their tests meet the standards.

After each country introduced different requirements, the authorities of the European Union agreed to standardize the requirements in the 27 member states.
