Theodotus lived in the 3rd century in Ancyra of Galatia (now the city of Ankara in Turkey). He had his own hotel, Theodotus was married and led a righteous lifestyle – he prayed a lot and fasted. Theodotus told pagans and Jews about Christ, thanks to which many believed. Also, according to legend, Theodotus had a special gift: he could heal the sick by laying on of hands.
Everything changed when Emperor Diocletian ascended the throne and began persecuting Christians. At his command, the cruel governor Theoteknos was sent to Ancyra, and many Christians had to flee the city. Theotekn announced that everyone professing Christianity must worship idols and make sacrifices – those who did not do this were executed.
Theodotus of Ancyra in his hotel sheltered Christians from their pursuers, fed them, and buried those who were executed. When the last Christian church in Ancyra was closed, liturgies began to be held at Theodotus. But soon they reported him to the ruler, and Theodotus died. The martyr was buried in Malos, and later a church was built there in honor of the saint.
