O remake Super Mario RPG Arrived to Nintendo Switch this Friday (17) and, with it, changes that slightly modernize the experience of Super Nintendo classic.
Apart from the graphical improvements, the new version includes changes to combat and menus. Find out, below, everything that changed in the remake in relation to the original Super Mario RPG.
Combat
Combat, without a doubt, is the section of the game that has received the most development attention. The most visible change to the battle screen is the new percentage meter in the bottom left corner.
Each hit and defense increases the percentage and, when it reaches 100%, the meter activates a powerful special attack that varies according to the team’s formation. There are specials focusing on physical, magical damage, defense and healing.
Another change that aims to make combat easier is the addition of an exclamation point as a visual indicator of perfect action commands.
Whether attacking or defending, pressing the command button at the right time activates an effect that results in wave damage to surrounding opponents. Therefore, the exclamation point serves to indicate whether the command was pressed at the exact moment.
Perfect commands also stack into the new chain attack effect, which is shown on the left side of the screen. Perfect attacks and defenses stack and, if not interrupted, the chain sequence activates damage enhancement.
Finally, another element that adds to a better readable battle is the fact that the enemies’ HP, weaknesses and thoughts are shown in a menu triggered by the Though Peak skill (formerly Psychopath). This data is recorded in the new enemies tab in the pause menu.
Menu
Another area of the game that has been reworked is the menu which, overall, offers a more accessible experience for players. Furthermore, the menu contains the Remake’s few “unreleased” story contents.
The new “scrapbook” (or “scrapbook”, in free translation into Portuguese) briefly summarizes the game’s history to date. A charming detail is that the notes are written by the other protagonists of the team who, as they join the team, leave their own opinions in the notes.
The monster list, which records opponent data, also includes certain lore content. This is because the list features new descriptions of each opponent – which offers a new glimpse into the world of Super Mario RPG.
Furthermore, the menu includes two different levels of difficulty: in addition to the traditional one, there is the new “Breeze” mode, an easy mode that includes easier battles and greater storage space.
In the case of controls, the remake contains the classic scheme (identified as “B”) and the new type “A”, created for the remake with the aim of requiring less button pressing.
The settings also allow you to change Mario’s movement in the scenarios, leaving running as the default or not, and the possibility of selecting aiming in battle or leaving it on automatic.
Finally, in the menu the player can choose the soundtrack in the classical or orchestrated version, which corresponds to the rearrangement conducted by the original composer, Yoko Shinomura.
