–
The Ascension of the Lord is included in the list of the Twelve Feasts, therefore, already the day before, during the festive divine service, solemn hymns and the All-Night Vigil begin. Believers must visit temples or devote time to prayer at home. The holiday always falls on a Thursday, so not everyone can go to church on this day. There is no fast on this date, so you can eat any food.
Among the Slavs, this date was known as the transition of spring to summer, during this period the heat begins. In ancient times, our ancestors traditionally led round dances, glorified God. At the end of the day, festive feasts and festivities were arranged.
On the Ascension of the Lord, pies with green onions and a special treat called “ladder” were often baked. It was a pie that was decorated with dough on top to make a kind of “crossbar”. They were consecrated in the church, and then placed on the festive table.
Ascension of the Lord: what can be done and prohibitions
On the feast of the Ascension of the Lord, there are certain prohibitions from the Orthodox Church:
you can not gossip, slander;
if you are asked for help, do not refuse;
it is forbidden to go to the cemetery and commemorate the dead;
you can not get married;
It is strictly forbidden to spit on the ground, because Jesus Christ walked on it.
But you can work on this day, because this is not a day off. Believers also try to give alms to the poor on the Ascension of the Lord, to help those in need.
