“What are the strange plastic parts on car doors for?”

On the frames of the doors of some cars, you can see strange plastic parts, which are most often found on frameless doors and are mounted above the glass. There are several versions of their purpose.

So, some believe that this is a holder for a windshield, others argue that this is a mount for an antenna or some kind of additional mirror. There is also a version that you can hang a curtain on this plastic from the outside.

However, in fact, the primary function of the strange piece is to serve as a guide for the glass. Some cars, especially coupes, have trouble closing the windows at high speeds. This is due to the shape of the glass and the lack of frames on the door, because of which it can be squeezed out of the car and not rise completely. However, due to the presence of a guide, the glass is aligned and enters its groove.

At the same time, in cars where there are frames on the doors, the plastic part plays a completely different role – it diverts the air flow from the side glass, preventing it from becoming dirty.
