What are the challenges of 5G implementation and the potential of 5G mobile phones in Indonesia? – All Pages

The pandemic era has actually contributed to the rapid rate of 5G adoption in Indonesia. History records that Telkomsel in early 2021 opened the 5G gateway in the country, followed by Indosat Ooredoo and XL Axiata. And of course it is undeniable that sooner or later, other operators such as Smartfren will also organize the super-fast network service.

In the Indonesia 5G Conference, session I with the theme ‘Exploration of 5G Services and Use Cases in Various Industries’ at least opens our view about the potential of 5G as a driving force for the industry.

Shurish Subbramaniam, Chief Technology Officer of Smartfren in the session explained, 5G with its capacity will make the industry move far ahead.

“The resulting speed is unbelievably fast, and very low latency. So, to apply the motion robot, it will be good, because there will be no delay, and it is very good for the industry, because the automation on the manufacturing side will run much more perfectly,” explained Shurish, in the event held by SelularID, Tuesday (26/10).

However, the challenge is to roll out the ideal 5G for the industry, which is still hampered by the availability of adequate spectrum, Shurish in this case emphasizes the issue of the ideal 5G spectrum which is not yet present in Indonesia.

“The spectrum of 3.5 GHz, 2.6 GHz, or millimeter wave frequencies is very much needed for the industrial ecosystem. I believe the government is working hard to bring the ideal 5G spectrum to Indonesia,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Indra Mardiatna, Vice President of Technology Strategy at Telkomsel who was also present at the event, also explained that so far the 5G spectrum has not been ideal.

“But that doesn’t mean you can’t roll out 5G. The analogy is the spectrum in the hotel business, for example the land, this is fundamental. Then 5G itself will be more efficient than 4G. And 5G has higher throughput than 4G,” said Indra.

Then he also views the use case, for consumer needs 5G is less complex than industrial needs. “Indeed, I see that 5G’s opportunities will indeed play a role in digital transformation from the industrial side,” he explained.

Meanwhile, to strengthen 5G use cases in the country itself, collaboration is certainly needed. “We believe that collaboration through the pentahelix scheme, which is collaboration between the government, campuses, entrepreneurs, communities and the media, is very much needed. We hope that we don’t just become (5G) users in the future, but continue further and Indonesia can make good use of it,” he said.

Meanwhile, according to the IDC report, there are more than 30% of consumers in Indonesia whose ICT spending is dominated by Smartphones, spending reaches a total of 36 million units of shipment in 2020.

At the Indonesia 5G Conference session II which took the theme of ‘Measuring Opportunities for 5G Handset Growth in the Community’, Mevira Munindra, Country Manager of IDC Indonesia explained, if consumers certainly have hopes of having 5G phones at affordable prices.

“The expectation is of course considering that 5G users in the future expect a price reduction. What we see in our market is of course the price of handsets with high specifications, but the cost for consumers is quite affordable,” explained Mevira.

Meanwhile, according to Aryo Meidianto. A, PR Manager of OPPO Indonesia, the availability of 5G phones owned by OPPO has contributed 3.6 percent in the country. To increase the number, depending on the stakeholders, how the government strengthens its regulations quickly, operators accelerate the 5G network so that it is present evenly.

“If all of that has gone smoothly, inevitably the demand for 5G smartphones will tend to be high. We are optimistic that if next year the 5G event gets better, Oppo will present more smartphones than in 2021 in Indonesia,” he said.

And OPPO’s position on 5G devices is currently in the range of Rp. 3 million, and if you look at the availability of OPPO devices in China, there are prices for 5G phones that have prices below Rp. 3 million.

“Why hasn’t it been marketed in the country, this is back to our principal who is in the learning stage, seeing what the 5G development process in Indonesia looks like, in order to be able to release OPPO devices throughout Indonesia later,” he said.

The event, which was held by the Cellular Media Network (SMN), is a form of appreciation for the telecommunications industry players in the country. Through the Indonesia 5G Conference webinar with the theme ‘Exploring 5G Opportunities in Diverse Industries’, it is hoped that this event can map the challenges faced by players, both in terms of technology and markets, as well as explore various opportunities that arise due to the presence of 5G.
