A study claims that video games can threaten children’s heart health
Researchers at Children’s Hospital Sydney, Australia, revealed in a recent medical study that they monitored heart complaints in children who play video games and who already suffer from heart problems.
Researchers studied reports of twenty-two children and adolescents who suffered heart rhythm disturbances while playing video games. In many cases, the children passed out suddenly and some experienced cardiac arrest, leading to the death of 4 children in the group they studied.
They stressed that it’s unclear how common such incidents are, stressing the need to monitor children as they play video games and seek medical advice if there is any fainting or fatigue among their children.
According to lead researcher Claire Lawley, a pediatric cardiologist, monitoring for any symptoms that indicate a heart disorder requires immediate parental intervention, according to the UPI news agency.
The researchers pointed out that video games contribute to the increase in “adrenaline,” which affects the cardiovascular system in ways similar to physical exertion, including increases in blood pressure and heart rate, and called for more research to know the effect of video games on the healthy hearts of its practitioners and also to expand the study of its consequences for those already suffering from heart disease or ailments.
