The Ministry of Health has made available a health protocol for health professionals.
This is probably a turning point in the Covid-19 epidemic. This Sunday, Mauricette, 78, resident in the long-term care unit of René-Muret hospital in Sevran, was the first patient to be vaccinated against the coronavirus in France.
While the French authorities hope to immunize nearly 14 million people by the spring, many other EU member countries have also started their vaccination campaigns on December 27. Earlier this month, Britain and the United States also injected the serum into the first patients.
Consent, contraindications
Vaccination is not, however, a trivial matter. In order to guide professionals in the weeks to come, the Ministry of Health has made available to them a health protocol which must be scrupulously observed.
The first stage takes place 5 days before vaccination. With his attending physician, the patient must perform a pre-vaccination consultation. The objective is to identify potential contraindications including allergies, to estimate the benefit-risk balance for the patient, as well as to clarify certain points of the operation if necessary.
On the scheduled day, healthcare professionals must ensure the patient’s identity and consent before the injection.
Recording and second injection
Once the injection is done, the third step is to record the vaccination in a file, which includes the name of the vaccine, the batch number, the identity of the patient as well as the place of vaccination. This file will be made available to health insurance, pharmacists and nurses.
The fourth step is patient follow-up. The doctor must therefore stay an additional fifteen minutes in order to monitor post-vaccination and any potential adverse effects. In addition, a second injection should take place 21 days later.
