Not all bacteria are harmful to the body. Some bacteria can be beneficial if consumed properly. Probiotics, for example, are bacteria that can help keep the body healthy if the right probiotic foods are eaten.
Probiotics are found naturally in the body, but sometimes it is advisable to give the body an extra dose to ensure good health. The main probiotics are lactobacilli and bifidobacteria.
According to the Spanish Society of Probiotics and Prebiotics (Sepyp), for an organism to be considered a probiotic it must meet the following characteristics:
They must produce antimicrobial substances, such as acid, hydrogen peroxide or bacterial riocins, they must be very resistant to the cavity in which they are going to be installed and to which it will go through to settle, they must not transmit their resistance to antibiotics, they must be easily cultivated and also overcome a test carried out outside a body, that is, in vitro, successfully and then work when it has been introduced into the body.
Within the group of probiotics we find two types, lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. What characteristics does each of them have?
Lactobacilli: Within the body, these bacteria are found in the digestive, urinary and genital systems. Their function is in the intestinal tract area as they help break down food, properly absorb nutrients and eliminate microorganisms that can cause disease.
Bifidobacteria: Bifidobacteria-type bacteria live in the bacterial flora of the intestine. Its function is similar to that of lactabacilli, but its main task is to help the rest of the probiotics in the body survive while preventing the growth of harmful bacteria.
Although the body creates these bacteria naturally, it is always advisable to add an extra dose through foods that are rich in probiotics. Which are the most recommended?
Kimchi: Although it is not a very common food, kimchi is one of the most recommended to take care of the body.
Pickles: Pickles, one of the most popular after-dinner foods, are fermented in salted water for a while, hence they are considered one of the best probiotic foods.
