Instagram Live Rooms now allow up to four users to broadcast live together to an audience, similar to the Clubhouse audio chat app.
LIVE ROOMS DE INSTAGRAM
Instagram has expanded the functionality of Live Rooms so that up to four users can now stream live video together. The feature allows users to broadcast conversations with others to a viewing audience.
Developing the feature to accommodate more live users feels like a response to the success of the Clubhouse audio chat app, in which users can listen to groups of speakers discussing different topics in different rooms.
Clubhouse’s explosion in popularity since its launch in March 2020, so far more than 8.1 million downloads, has not gone unnoticed.
Twitter announced its Spaces feature late last year and Facebook is also said to be working on a Clubhouse clone.
It’s no exaggeration to think that Instagram would have implemented the functionality for multiple users to go live together anyway, but it’s also not hard to think that the functionality wouldn’t have qualified as Live Rooms, or something like that, if not for the Clubhouse effect.
NOT A NEW FEATURE?
It was already possible for Instagram users to invite someone else to chat on their live stream. However, as Instagram announced, the number of potential live streamers in a room has doubled.
Instagram says it hopes the feature will open up more creative opportunities for users, such as talk shows, jam sessions, co-creation meetings, Q&A, and tutorials.
It also suggests that expanding the feature will increase the opportunity to monetize content., having recently introduced badges that users can purchase to support their favorite creators.
HOW TO USE INSTAGRAM LIVE ROOMS
- Add guests and be invited as a guest to Instagram Live Rooms
Live rooms are initially available to creators, but Instagram says they will be available to everyone soon.
To create a room, users can simply swipe left from the Instagram home screen to open the Instagram Live camera interface.

It is also possible to navigate there by tapping the plus sign at the top of the home screen. From the live camera screen, a title can be added for the broadcast, as well as the guests with whom to go live.

Clubhouse isn’t the only other app that Instagram and its parent company Facebook have drawn inspiration from. The addition of Stories followed the success of Snapchat, while the most recently added Reels feature relies heavily on TikTok and its short-form video premise.
