At the recent 4th China International Industrial Design Exhibition (CIIDE), Oppo presented a design conceptual of a smartphone designed between the Chinese firm and the leading Japanese design studio nendo, Founded by Oki Sato, named designer of the year in 2015 and an expert in unifying nostalgia and technology.
It’s about a smartphone sliding, as Oppo has baptized it, which opens in different folds according to the user’s needs. The idea arose from the different uses we give to the phone: messages, photos, playing audiovisual content, recording videos, etc. For this reason, the “sliding phone” opens up to meet all these needs until it reaches a full size of 7 inches through three folding screens.
The device does not appear to have hinges and they have not explained, neither Oppo nor Sato, how they achieve this and this is one of the great difficulties. But this is a proof of concept, an exploration of what it could be.

By unfolding the first part of the body, a small screen is obtained, conceived for the simplest functions, such as reading a message, accessing the control of audio playback or call history. The second open screen (3.15 inches) allows you to view what the camera will see, do quick Internet searches or take selfies. Finally, the last seven-inch screen is the one that allows you to view movies, read content and play video games.
Will we see it on the street? While the most likely answer is no, what is interesting is the exploration. In technology, unlike in science, the ability to do the unexpected can (and often is encouraged) without sufficient evidence. In this case, the first obstacle would be the thickness of the phone, obviously very thin. But Oppo has already created the thinnest 5G phone on the market (The Reno model was at the time) and in 2012, when most phones were 0.90 centimeters thick, the Oppo Finder model it did not exceed 0.65.

It would also be necessary to explore the space for the battery (something that could be greatly reduced thanks to a large part of the processes that can be carried out in the Cloud, more efficient Wi-Fi connections, etc.), how powerful the cameras would be and details such as screen resolution. Despite this, the interesting thing is that Oppo is growing: it already occupies the fifth position globally in sales of smartphones (in back of Samsung, Huawei, Apple and Xiaomi) and is on the podium in China and India. The five positions worldwide are occupied by four Asian countries: one of them with a blockade and another, such as Oppo, which has not yet launched its strategy fully in Europe and is considering launching in the United States. If Apple wants to propose a competitive strategy in the phone market, it should change and dare to revolutionize, especially considering that it has been selling for five years. fewer and fewer phones and this year the numbers have dropped to 2014 levels. It is clear that he cannot rest on his laurels.
